Nonpublic School Statistics Maryland
- There are 778 nonpublic schools in Maryland serving more than 131,000 K-12 students
- At an average public-school per-pupil cost of $12,508 (2007-08), nonpublic schools save state taxpayers $1.5 BILLION in per-pupil expenditures.
- Due to rising tuition associated with increasing costs, such as teacher salaries and building maintenance, many nonpublic schools in the state are experiencing a decrease in enrollment. (See link to enrollment chart below.)
- Some schools, especially in inner city areas, have been forced to close: in the past five years, nearly 10 Catholic schools have closed or merged in Baltimore City.
- If 50 students from a closed nonpublic school were to move to the public schools, public school costs would increase by $625,400 – more than half a million dollars.
