Nonpublic School Statistics Maryland
- There are 778 nonpublic schools in Maryland serving 136,368 K-12 students, and another 478 schools serving 47,367 PreK-K students.
- At an average public-school per-pupil cost of $9,661 (2004-05), nonpublic schools save state taxpayers $1.3 BILLION in per-pupil expenditures.
- Due to rising tuition associated with increasing costs, such as teacher salaries and building maintenance, many nonpublic schools in the state are experiencing a decrease in enrollment. (See link to enrollment chart below.)
- Some schools, especially in inner city areas, have been forced to close: in the past five years, nearly 10 Catholic schools have closed or merged in Baltimore City.
- If 50 students from a closed nonpublic school were to move to the public schools, public school costs would increase by $483,050 – nearly half a million dollars.
